Forgot a PDF password? What actually works

No legitimate tool can remove a modern PDF's password without it, so the fastest route is usually finding it or asking the sender. Here is where to look.

1. Ask the person or organisation that sent the file

They set the password and can tell you, or send an unprotected copy. Banks, insurers, payroll providers and tax portals can usually re-issue a statement or reset access.

2. Check the message that came with it

Passwords are often in the same email, letter or portal message, or follow a pattern the sender describes (an account number, a date of birth, a reference code). Check with the sender rather than guessing.

3. Download it again

If it came from a portal, download it again; some portals offer an unprotected version, or let you set your own password.

4. If you made the file yourself

Check your password manager, browser saved passwords, and the original document the PDF was exported from. Exporting again without a password is the cleanest fix.

What does not work

Sites that promise to "recover" any password are either guessing short passwords or not telling you the truth. AES-256 PDF encryption cannot be broken by a website. UnsealPDF does not guess, crack or recover passwords. If you do remember or find the password, it removes it and verifies the result. The free check tells you the lock type first, and you pay nothing if the password is wrong.

Questions

Can a website recover my forgotten PDF password?

Not for modern encryption. Anything that claims to is guessing common passwords or misleading you. Ask the sender or check where you stored it.

What if I have the password but it is rejected?

Check capital letters, spaces and keyboard layout. If it still fails, ask the sender to confirm it or to re-send the file.
